The end-of-year holiday period is packed with delicious possibilities. It also comes with sky-high expectations.
One fool proof way of having a fabulous time is by spending it right here, in the spellbinding surrounds of Byron Bay. The buzz during this festive season is palpable. Everyone’s relaxed, and our usual sleepy town snaps, crackles and pops to life.
Now we’ve gotten the where out of the way, the only decision left is how to spend New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day?
From sipping vodka cocktails around Elements of Byron’s firepit, to watching the sun descend over the ocean to saluting the rising sun on New Year’s Day, there’s no shortage of soirees to usher in the new year.
To get you started, we’ve compiled a selection of some of Byron Bay’s finest NYE events.
First Sun Cape Byron Lighthouse
This uplifting celebration turns the party paradigm on its head – literally. Rather than nursing a hangover, don’t be surprised to find yourself in a headstand or downward dog on New Year’s Day!
What better way to say ‘namaste’ and set your conscious intentions for the year ahead than by seeing the sunrise with a bunch of strangers who already feel like friends?
Held at the iconic Cape Byron Lighthouse, this annual crack-of-dawn event has warmed the hearts of countless locals and visitors. Plus it’s completely free. Along with soulful yoga, music and meditation add to the positive vibes.
Meet in the Clarkes Beach carpark, and either walk or catch a shuttle bus to the lighthouse.
For a quintessential Byron Bay pub experience, look no further than the ultra-relaxed Beach Hotel, or simply ‘The Beachy’ to locals.
With prime real estate overlooking the sparkling waters of Main Beach, this drinking hole is a happy mix of classic pub grub (who else still serves chicken parma?), honest-to-goodness entertainment and the promise of bumping into someone you can have an interesting yarn with.
Its 2018/2019 NYE party will showcase DJs, cocktails and a dress code you’ll have oodles of fun with Paradise. Tickets are on sale now. Early bird discounts apply.
Byron Bay Soul Street
For those of you with knee-huggers in tow, this homegrown New Year’s Eve party in Byron Bay’s main street is the ultimate family-friendly event.
Each year, Jonson Street transforms itself into a colourful, car-free hub of activities with artisan stalls, food stalls, roving performers and buskers. A delight for all ages, Soul Street is both free and alcohol-free. It starts from 4pm, perfect for those without the endurance to do the countdown to midnight.
This wonderful celebration aims to showcase the region’s ‘creativity, lifestyle, and talent’. The party runs down the centre of Jonson Street from Byron Community Centre to Lawson Lane and through to Railway Park, the main stage for live acts.
No visit to Byron Bay is complete without visiting Harvest, situated in the historic village of Newrybar about 16kms from Elements of Byron.
A divine restaurant with a ‘farm fresh and organic’ ethos, Harvest also boasts an artisan delicatessen and a bakery with a 116-year-old wood fired oven.
On the menu, expect to find a mouth-watering repertoire of dishes. They range from the kingfish ceviche with finger lime and chilli starter, and one for overseas visitors – kangaroo loin with sweet potato and radicchio.
If that’s not enough, this culinary institution also hosts wicked New Year’s Eve parties. This year, Harvest is inviting punters to “unleash your inner animal amidst the opulence of dazzling disco tunes”. Tickets cost $225 per head, including food, drinks and festivities.
