Celebrating 10 Years of Connection

The Fifth Element: The People Behind a Decade at Elements of Byron

Ten years ago, Elements of Byron was imagined around four natural forces – earth, air, fire and water.

Dunes shifting softly underfoot.
Ocean stretching beyond the horizon.
Rainforest breathing quietly behind each villa.
Sunlight warming timber decks at dusk.

But over time, something less visible – and far more powerful – began to define the resort.

A fifth element emerged.

People and connection.

A Resort Built to Sit Lightly – and Last

Set across 50 acres on Belongil Beach, Elements of Byron was designed to exist in quiet conversation with its surroundings.

Buildings occupy less than four per cent of the land, allowing wetlands, rainforest and native ecosystems to regenerate and flourish.

Guests move seamlessly between ocean and canopy, between wildlife and wide open sky. It remains Byron Bay’s only luxury beachfront resort – a rare convergence of iconic Australian terrain.

But while nature shapes the setting, it is people who shape the feeling.

The Fifth Element: Human Connection

As the resort marks its 10-year anniversary, it reflects not only on architecture or awards – but on the human continuity that has defined it.

Since opening in 2016, Elements of Byron has grown from a founding team of approximately 120 to a seasonal workforce of up to 260 – becoming one of the region’s largest private employers.

What makes this remarkable is not just growth – but longevity.

Many team members have built their careers here:

  • Simon our Grounds Keeper who tended to the land here prior to Elements of Byron conception
  • Amy our Spa Therapist who became Spa Manager
  • Jess our Reservations Agent who stepped into Revenue Management
  • Anais our Housekeeping Supervisor who rose to Housekeeping Manager
  • Or Rebecca our HR Manager who started wearing a hard hat and a construction white card

This progression is more than operational success. It is cultural continuity.

For returning guests, it means familiar faces at check-in.

A therapist who remembers how you like your pressure.
A waiter who recalls your anniversary wine.

It is intuitive service born not from scripts – but from years of shared experience.

Guests Who Don’t Just Stay – They Return

Around 20 percent of guests return for multiple stays, with three per cent visiting five or more times.

Some families have returned every year since opening.
Some couples request the same villa, at the same time, each anniversary.
Some guests have stayed more than 30 times.

Over the past decade, Elements has quietly become the backdrop to life’s milestones — proposals, growing families, significant birthdays, private retreats.

Luxury here is not transactional.

It is ritual.

It is tradition.

It is the comfort of knowing you will be remembered.

The Evolution of Modern Luxury

General Manager Michael Skinner reflects that what stays with guests isn’t simply the facilities – but how they feel here.

“Guests tell us time and time again that what stays with them isn’t just the accommodation or the facilities. It’s how they feel here – connected to nature, supported by the team, and able to slow down in a way that’s increasingly rare.”

“A decade ago, luxury was often defined by visible opulence. Today, it is defined by access to the extraordinary – space, nature, meaningful experiences.” says General Manager Michael Skinner.

At Elements of Byron, wellness is not confined to Osprey Spa. It flows through villa design, dining, nature walks and daily rituals.

Under Executive Chef Craig Robertson, the culinary philosophy has matured into a produce-led approach centred on local and foraged ingredients.

And Osprey Spa has evolved from time-efficient treatments to immersive rituals focused on nervous system regulation and restoration.

This is luxury redefined – not as excess, but as depth.

A Place Anchored in Community

Beyond its dunes and villas, the resort has invested deeply in the Byron Bay community. Owners Peggy and Brian Flannery have contributed more than $5.5 million to local charities and initiatives through their foundation.

More than 35 industry awards now recognise the resort’s leadership in wellness, sustainability and design.

Yet for Peggy, the pride lies not in accolades – but in people.

And that sentiment echoes across the property.

“I am so proud Elements of Byron has proven to be one of the top luxury resorts in NSW and that so many people have enjoyed holidaying here,” said Peggy. “Brian and I are immensely grateful to our team, all our wonderful staff and our local suppliers who enable us to operate every single day”.

Ten Years On

Ten years is a milestone.

But at Elements of Byron, it feels less like a finish line – and more like a continuation.

The dunes are still shifting.
The rainforest is still breathing.
The ocean still rises and falls beyond the villas.

And inside the resort, familiar faces continue to greet familiar guests.

The fifth element endures – not because it was designed, but because it was nurtured.

Because in the end, the most lasting luxury is not architecture or awards.

It is belonging.
