Top 5 Things to do in Byron Bay for August

Planning a weekend in Byron Bay this August? Winter is one of the best times to visit—with crisp mornings, golden afternoons, and a rich calendar of cultural events. From awe-inspiring whale encounters to thought-provoking exhibitions and local art trails, Byron Bay and the Northern Rivers region come alive in winter with soulful experiences.

Here’s our curated guide to the top 5 things to do in Byron Bay in August 2025, perfect for weekend getaways, family holidays, or culture-filled retreats.

1) Whale Watching with Out of the Blue Adventures

Experience Byron Bay’s most extraordinary wildlife encounter with Out of the Blue Adventures, the region’s #1 whale watching tour. Led by a passionate Marine Biologist, this eco-certified experience departs from Ballina’s Richmond River and takes you into the breathtaking Cape Byron Marine Park.

As Humpback Whales migrate past Australia’s most easterly point, you’ll enjoy jaw-dropping encounters, live whale song via an underwater hydrophone, and 360° viewing aboard a custom-built vessel. These gentle giants often breach close to shore, giving you a front-row seat to nature’s most acrobatic display.

With guaranteed sightings from June 1 to the end of October, you’ll either spot whales—or come back for free.

“From breaching mothers and calves to migrating pods, every moment on the water is unforgettable.”

2) Byron Writers Festival

8–10 August 2025 | Bangalow Showgrounds
Proudly partnered by Elements of Byron

Celebrate storytelling, creativity, and big ideas at the beloved Byron Writers Festival, set in the picturesque hinterland village of Bangalow.

Over three days, more than 140 writers, thinkers, poets, journalists, and artists will share their insights and imagination across panels, workshops, and conversations under the winter sun. The 2025 program highlights the Festival’s four signature pillars: the main Festival, the Writers’ Academy, the StoryBoard program for young readers, and year-round cultural events.

Whether you’re a passionate reader or a curious mind, this festival will leave you inspired, connected, and creatively recharged.

Get hands-on with local creativity at the 13th Annual North Coast Mud Trail—a celebration of clay, community, and craftsmanship.

Follow the trail map to explore open studios, pottery workshops, live demos, and a wide range of ceramic styles from functional to fine art. Chat with local potters about their processes, techniques, and inspirations, and take home a one-of-a-kind piece created right here on Bundjalung Country.

Winding through lush hinterland and coastal villages, the Mud Trail combines art and adventure for a truly immersive weekend experience.
