Environmental Design & Sensitivity

At Elements of Byron, sustainability is at the core of our operations, with a strong emphasis on energy and water conservation.

Our villas are powered by over 2,000 solar panels (1200 kW) installed on the villa roofs, with a battery capacity of 1100 kW, significantly reducing our carbon footprint. In partnership with Redx Solar, this initiative is projected to lower our energy costs while providing a reliable source of clean, renewable energy.

We further support clean energy through our collaboration with the Byron Solar Train, contributing surplus power back to the grid and expanding our sustainability impact beyond the resort itself.

In line with our commitment to reducing carbon emissions, we also offer electric vehicle charging stations on-site, providing guests with a convenient way to charge their electric cars and promote sustainable travel.

Water conservation is another key focus. We’ve implemented water-sensitive urban designs, allowing us to capture and reuse rainwater throughout the property. From topping up our pools to irrigating our gardens, we ensure that water is managed efficiently and responsibly.

Energy & Water Conservation

Elements of Byron is a shining example of how a resort can be designed to complement rather than compete with nature. With only 30% of the site developed, we have protected over 70% of the land, leaving vast areas of untouched wilderness for guests to explore and enjoy. The architecture of the resort embraces passive solar principles to reduce energy consumption while enhancing the natural flow of light and air throughout our spaces.

Over 200,000 native trees and plants have been carefully reintroduced to restore and enhance the local ecologies. Our section of critically endangered coastal littoral rainforest is a sanctuary for over 70 threatened plant and animal species, making Elements of Byron one of the largest privately owned conservation sites in New South Wales.

Conserving Wildlife & Habitat

At Elements of Byron, we recognise that protecting the land also means protecting the wildlife that calls it home. Our resort is proud to preserve a critically endangered coastal rainforest, which serves as an essential habitat for various threatened species. As part of our ongoing efforts to protect biodiversity, we manage extensive wetlands and rehabilitate native plant species, providing a healthy environment for local fauna to thrive.

The resort actively supports Byron Shire Council’s Coastal Management Programs, which focus on protecting the coastal environment sustainably and building long-term resilience. A key priority is addressing tidal flooding and erosion risks in Belongil Creek, with plans to adapt development guidelines to rising sea levels and protect biodiversity into the future.

Nurturing the body and mind should also nurture the environment, which is why we have integrated eco-conscious principles into all of our wellness offerings. Our wellness facilities, including Osprey Spa, are designed to minimise environmental impact through eco-friendly products and energy-efficient systems. From solar-powered operations to paperless client management, every aspect of our services is focused on reducing our footprint.

We prioritise organic and sustainably sourced products in our treatments, allowing guests to relax while knowing they are contributing to a healthier planet. Many of these eco-friendly skincare and body care products are also available for purchase in our retail section.

Our treatments are crafted to rejuvenate the body while aligning with our sustainability ethos. For example, Osprey Spa uses bulk-packaged, eco-conscious products to reduce plastic waste without compromising on luxury.

Local Partnerships
We proudly partner with Beacon Laundry, a local social enterprise that champions sustainability and provides employment opportunities for individuals facing barriers to the workforce. This collaboration underscores our commitment to supporting both the environment and our community.

Reducing, Reusing & Recycling

At Elements of Byron, we prioritise waste reduction through a variety of initiatives. Our Nespresso capsule recycling programme allows guests to enjoy their coffee guilt-free, knowing that the capsules will be responsibly recycled.

Our spa and villa guest amenities have been chosen with sustainability in mind, featuring refillable Apelles products that reduce single-use plastic waste. We have installed water filter taps in villas to eliminate single-use plastic. We also use biodegradable packaging for our in-room dining services and have swapped out traditional chocolate bars in minibars for Loco Love chocolate—a brand committed to organic ingredients and sustainable farming.

Rainforest-to-Table Dining at Azure Restaurant

Azure Restaurant offers more than just exquisite dining; it’s a celebration of local and native ingredients, carefully selected to support sustainable agriculture and reduce food miles. Our chefs work closely with local, family-owned farms, producers, and suppliers ensuring transparency in sourcing and a strong commitment to ethical practices.

Azure’s menu showcases native Australian plants like saltbush and warrigal greens, many of which are grown right on our property. By using over 60 varieties of native plants grown on resort grounds, we offer guests a unique culinary experience that is truly rooted in the Northern Rivers region.

We prioritise long-term partnerships with local farmers who practice sustainable and ethical farming. Our focus on seasonal ingredients means we adapt our menus based on what nature provides, avoiding the need to fly in out-of-season products.

From using “ugly” fruits and vegetables for juices to recycling cooking oil into bio-diesel, Azure Restaurant is dedicated to reducing waste and maximising the use of every ingredient.

Guest Engagement & Education

We believe that creating a sustainable resort involves inviting our guests to be a part of the journey. Throughout their stay, guests are encouraged to engage in eco-conscious activities, from exploring our native landscapes to learning about our sustainability projects.

In addition Guests can participate in birdwatching tours to see some of the 253 bird species that live on or visit the property, including the endangered Glossy Black Cockatoo.
