Mustering, stunt riding and gymnastics on horseback – Kate has spent much of her life learning the nuances and personality traits of her horses. Born and bred in Byron Bay, the gifted rider first saddled up as a four-year-old before competing on a national level in equestrian vaulting.
“Vaulting requires you to have skills in both gymnastics and horsemanship,” she explains. “Not only do you need to control your own strength and rhythm but also interpret and predict your horse’s abilities.”
During her 20’s Kate headed inland to experience the unique world of a Stockwoman, an iconic (predominantly male) figure of the Australian landscape famously depicted in The Man from Snowy River.
“Droving on a remote pastoral station was an exhilarating experience,” Kate explains. “Our days would start early and end late. It was a challenging and, at times, exhausting experience but it taught me how to be observant and understand the local environment.”
It’s this incredible life experience that Kate brings to Zephyr Horses, a boutique riding school she owns and operates on a stunning ranch next door to Elements of Byron resort.
“Our amazing forest trails lead directly onto a beautiful stretch of beach managed by NSW Marine Parks, which means we abide by all the regulations that help protect this precious environment,” she says. “Guests not only get to ride along scenic forest tracks and fire trails but will also learn how to crack a Stockman’s whip while we sit around the campfire enjoying a billy tea.”
Zephyr horses are exceptionally well bred and trained, with a mix of ponies, Clydesdales, thoroughbreds and Australian stock breeds catering to everyone from small children to experienced riders.
“We are safe and personalised, keeping groups to a maximum of eight,” Kate explains. “We also use and regularly maintain top-of-the-range equipment, so guests can experience the comfort of a quality saddle and secure helmet throughout their ride.”

Bring long pants, enclosed shoes. Photos can be taken from your camera or the instructors, refreshments (incl. a campfire weather permitting) provided afterwards.
