During the year, local producers and chefs gather at a couple of choice events to offer the results of their hard work to appreciative foodies. Arriving from across the country, these visitors are treated to a diversity of experiences presented by some of the finest food talents in Australia.
To plan your next fine-food visit, we’ve put together a selection of food festivals that you can enjoy, right here in Byron Bay, as well as some great food tasting tours you can take year-round.
Discover Byron’s Best Food
Harvest Food Festival showcases the best artisans and food producers in the Northern Rivers. In 2019, this 12-day celebration takes place between the 24 April – 5 May 2019 at various venues.
Hosted by Northern Rivers Food, visitors can enjoy exclusive lunches, dinners and parties as well as informative guided bus tours, all hosted by Byron’s innovative, local artisans.
The event also includes a Harvest Food Trail – a curated self-drive hinterland tour complete with farm visits and roadside stalls where you can buy fresh produce direct from the fields.
In September, Sample Food Festival once again provides a mouth-watering insight into the culinary richness of this region. The festival, which attracted 17,000 visitors last year, takes place on the 1st Saturday of September in Bangalow’s Showgrounds.
This vibrant event focuses on the best food in Northern NSW, giving the gathered gastronomes a true reflection of the rich diversity available here.
The region’s top restaurants will be here to compete for the coveted Gold Fork Awards. You can enjoy their competitive efforts in the special lunch event.
And if you just can’t wait for either of these food festivals, there are a couple of ways to discover the best of Byron’s gastronomic wonder year-round.
Tasting Plate Tours run daily and offer guests the opportunity to savour Byron’s finest food and drink as part of specialised private tours. These full-day tours include hidden restaurants, local farms and boutique distilleries.
Part indulgence, part education, Tasting Plate Tours celebrate the wide variety of expertise available in the Byron region. Choose a back-road tour of the hinterland’s farms and restaurants, or opt for The Distiller tour, taking in boutique distilleries including the Cape Byron Distillery.
Touring in luxury vehicles, you can indulge in all that’s on offer on plate and in glass, safe in the knowledge that you’ll be picked up and driven back to your accommodation, thoroughly satisfied.
And for an informal insight, head to the many Farmer’s Markets that take place throughout the week across the Byron region. You can find more information on these in our guide to Byron’s Farmers’ Markets.
