Retrospect galleries

While Byron Bay may not be renowned for contemporary art like Melbourne and Sydney, there are, in fact, several hidden gems of galleries worth visiting. And for a gentle afternoon activity for couples in Byron Bay, what could be better than discovering some delightful new perspectives on beauty?

In town, try Retrospect Gallery – Byron’s leading contemporary art space offering a regular rotation of exhibitions. The nearby Lone Goat Gallery is an independent gallery that focusses strongly on local artists’ work, giving a more local flavour to the art on its walls.

But one local artist’s gallery, in particular, is worth stopping in at en route to the beach. Craig Parry is a photographer of international acclaim and has a gallery located less than a minute from Main Beach.

Inside, you’ll find sleek white walls covered in stunning photos of all things oceanic. Be warned: this visit may prove too tempting to leave empty-handed.

Further afield, visit the Tweed Gallery and stay for lunch with a view of beautiful gardens and the valley below.

With six exhibition spaces and an art centre dedicated to Australia’s best-loved still-life painter, Margaret Olley, this is a half-day trip where you can immerse in all things refined and cultural.

….and Perfect Evenings

As the sun sets, our images of romance shift to lit candles and heartfelt sentiments whispered into attentive ears. Start the romance of this town’s greatest nightly show: sunset over Byron Bay, witnessed by couples from around the world from Cape Byron Lighthouse.

If nature’s performance had you rapt, look for an encore in the diverse programme of Byron Theatre. This intimate venue features music, theatre, film and dance performances from local and touring artists, with several shows most weeks.

Alternatively, continue to make Byron’s nature the star by taking a slow stroll hand-in-hand along Main Beach to the sounds of the ocean. Slowly the acoustic sounds of buskers who play next to the Surf Club will take over – an opportunity to pause and take in one more quintessential Byron experience.

Beach restaurant at dusk

When it’s time to wine and dine your loved one, head to the best restaurants in Byron Bay. In this great foodie town, there are a wealth of great options to choose from.

As Byron Bay’s only Hatted Restaurant, Beach Byron Bay offers stunning dishes inspired by the coast, all with a view of the ocean. Located above Clarkes Beach, this restaurant is romance personified – fine dining to the sound of the waves breaking gently below. And its wine list is award-winning too.

For dinner in an idyllic hinterland village, head to Newrybar and discover Harvest Restaurant. With seasonal produce sourced locally, this quiet, rustic restaurant creates dishes that celebrate the very best of this region. With a deli and cafe attached and a wine list celebrating small winemakers, there are reasons to visit throughout the day too.

Back in Byron town, The Italian offers a creative experience of contemporary Mediterranean food. Full of inventiveness, this is a menu you may want to revisit over and over.

If you’d prefer a South American twist, head across the road from the resort to Barrio. Their wood-fired oven and charcoal grill makes the richness of taste the hero of each dish in this relaxed eatery.

For the area’s finest degustation menus, head to Fleet in Brunswick Heads (best to book well in advance) or stay on-resort to enjoy dinner at Azure Bar and Grill.

Both celebrate the best local produce with creative, refined dishes worthy of any fine dining restaurant.
